Ceramic-Backed Elbow

A pipe elbow with a ceramic compound bonded to the outside radius — the wear face. Used in pneumatic conveying to handle abrasive bulk material at 10–20× the wear life of uncoated steel.

Also known as: Ceram-Back, ceramic backed elbow, CB elbow

A ceramic-backed elbow is a steel pipe elbow with a tungsten-carbide-toughened ceramic compound applied to the outside radius — the surface where conveyed material impacts on every turn. The ceramic is typically 5 to 10 millimeters thick, bonded with industrial epoxy, and engineered for impact resistance rather than scratch resistance. In US pneumatic conveying installations, ceramic-backed is the dominant wear-elbow design. The leading manufacturer is Progressive Products (Pittsburg, Kansas), who invented the technology under the Ceram-Back® trademark in the late 1970s. Competing designs include ceramic tile-lined elbows (Chinese manufacturing dominant), wear-back elbows (Ni-Hard cast iron), and deflection elbows (HammerTek SmartElbow®). Ceramic-backed is preferred over tile-lined in critical-path applications because the failure mode is gradual rather than catastrophic. A worn ceramic-backed elbow leaks through the casing; a worn tile-lined elbow sheds tiles into the downstream material stream.
